Not sure which high-performance polymer to choose?

Temperatures, chemical resistance, cost and when they can replace aluminum: the full comparison is in our technical guide.

How to choose a polymer class

The higher the tier, the greater the heat, mechanical and chemical resistance, and the higher the cost. Choose the lowest tier that meets your requirements for temperature, load and chemical resistance. Within each tier, amorphous polymers soften gradually and shrink little, so they stay more stable during printing; semi-crystalline polymers melt at a precise temperature and better resist solvents, wear and fatigue.

  1. Ultra-performance

    extrusion above 400 °C

    Amorphous: PEKK-A · PEI (Ultem™) · TPI

    Semi-crystalline: PEEK · PEKK-C · PAEK

  2. High-performance

    extrusion above 350 °C

Amorphous: PPSU · PSU · PES

    Semi-crystalline: PPS · PVDF

  3. Engineering polymers

    extrusion above 220 °C

    Amorphous: PC · PC/ABS · PPE/PS

    Semi-crystalline: PA12 · PA6 · POM

  4. Commodity polymers

    extrusion above 160 °C

Amorphous: ABS · ASA · PETG · HIPS

    Semi-crystalline: PLA · PP

Extrusion temperatures are indicative. Photopolymer resins (MSLA) are a separate family, outside the pyramid. The catalog above lists the materials we print, with their specifications.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Everything designers and purchasing managers need to know about materials for industrial 3D printing.

PEEK holds the typical FDM tolerances: ±0.6 mm on dimensions up to 100 mm and ±0.75% above. For tighter tolerances we CNC-machine the critical features of the printed part.

PEEK is the benchmark high-performance polymer (HDT ~250 °C, excellent chemical and fatigue resistance). PEKK crystallizes in a more controllable way, with less shrinkage on complex geometries. Ultem 9085/1010 (PEI) is FST-certified for aerospace and offers the best cost-to-performance ratio when you do not need PEEK's 240 °C continuous service temperature.

A high-performance polymer wins when the part needs low weight, electrical or thermal insulation, chemical resistance or complex geometries that cannot be CNC-machined. PEEK weighs about half as much as 6061 aluminum (1.3 vs 2.7 g/cm³) but, unfilled, is less stiff and less strong: it replaces aluminum where weight, insulation or chemical resistance matter more than load. Continuous carbon fiber composite (CFC), by contrast, reaches specific stiffness and strength comparable to aluminum at about half the weight.

Yes: every material in the catalog has a downloadable technical data sheet (TDS) with mechanical, thermal and chemical properties and process parameters. On request we supply batch certificates of conformity and, for aerospace Ultem, FST documentation.

To validate form and fit, the best value is engineering-grade PLA or PETG in FDM. For prototypes that see real loads we recommend Nylon PA12 in SLS: mechanical behavior close to the production part at a fraction of the cost of PEEK.
